Hi there, I’m Melanie and Welcome to Simple Made Pretty!
About me: I’m a homemaker, DIYer, craftaholic, home organizer, minimalist, writer, thirty-something mom of two amazing children, our fur-baby, and wife to an incredible husband of 9 years.
My mission is to create simplicity in homemaking tasks while providing DIY ideas that spark creativity.
I have a small obsession with collecting coffee mugs and wine corks – which might also reveal that I have a love for coffee and wine 🙂
But enough about me… because I’m here for you and this website was made for you.
I’m here to help you find simple solutions to your home management struggles and also want you to have fun trying some of the easy (and free) DIY projects on my blog.
How Simple Made Pretty Started…
My story may sound familiar. I was one of those employees that used to sit in an office all day, wishing that I could be somewhere or someone else.
Yep, I literally wished that I could be someone else.
It’s not that I hated my life, I just wasn’t happy with my current situation and it didn’t help that Facebook and Pinterest made everyone else’s lives seem picture-perfect.
In 2010, I went back to work after being a stay at home mom for my (then) 1-year old daughter. My hubby was still growing his real estate business and we really needed the money. Plus, I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and felt like I was wasting it away ☹
But I hated the type of work I was doing.
I was the manager of a shared office space (like Regus – but it wasn’t Regus, haha). Although the pay was freaking amazing, I found myself staring at the computer screen or my phone most days, surfing Pinterest for my next weekend craft or home DIY project (which are my passions).
Pinterest gave me so many crafty ideas that I was inspired to throw a huge Princess Party (you might have called it a “Pinterest party”, lol) for my daughter’s 3rd birthday.
And that is when I bought my first Cricut machine.
(I seriously circle all my success back to Cricut in every freaking story, I just love all their products!)
I made the fancy invitations and all of the decorations for her princess party. Heck, we even had a professional Disney princess at the party! And although it looked like we spent hundreds of dollars on this “Pinterest Princess Party,” we really only spent $50 since everything was DIY.
All my friends were amazed and said I should start a blog or an Etsy shop. They just couldn’t believe I wasn’t sharing my talent with others. I was flattered but brushed it off until a year later, when I finally opened an Etsy shop (which you can read about in this post).
At that time I was following a few craft and home décor bloggers that I admired. I was obsessed with Dear Lillie’s home décor and wanted a home just like her’s. I loved Lia Griffith and her paper craft tutorials. So, when I stumbled upon the popular Liz Marie blog and her “how to start a blog” tutorial, I followed her steps and launched my blog right away.
At first, I wasn’t sure exactly what to blog about, but I knew I wanted to help others.
Fast-forward 3 years after starting Simple Made Pretty and here’s what I know now:
- I want to inspire you by sharing craft projects and DIY ideas for your home
- I want to share my knowledge and experience managing my home and family life so you can better manage yours
- I want to help you create a “Pinterest Party” on a Dollar Store budget just like I did!
- And I want to help you accomplish all of the above no matter where you are in the world

More About Me…
I started Simple Made Pretty in January 2016 to showcase my biggest passions: organizing, simplifying, home décor, DIY projects, and crafting.
I grew up on a farm with 5 siblings and was raised to work hard with a simple lifestyle. I learned how to sew, clean, cook and live frugally at a young age. I found that many of my close friends did not have the hand-made, home-grown roots as I did and would always comment on my creativity and my “Martha-Stewart-like” characteristics. Those same friends encouraged me to share my passions with others and the Simple Made Pretty blog was born.
My family is my inspiration for all that I do. My husband is my biggest supporter and he is what keeps our family going each day…he is one of my greatest blessings and I am forever grateful for him.
The best way to stay connected is to sign up for my free weekly email newsletter, which offers inspiration and tips with links to my latest blog posts.
You can find me on Facebook where I share ideas and inspiration about minimalism and home organizing, or on Pinterest where I share it all – creative projects, insight to simplify your life, homemaking tips & tricks, and much more!
