If you feel disorganized in your home, it may be because your home lacks a command center. A command center is a location in your home to keep essential tasks, to-dos, and schedules in order for everyone in your home. Your command center doesn’t have to be beautiful as long as it is functional for your family’s needs. A highly functional command center should have a large calendar with everyone’s schedules and important reminders, some type of meal planning system or menu board, a chore chart/list for household members, and wall hooks for keys and misc. items. Here’s how to organize and create a command center!
How to Create a Command Center
You may or may not have some existing organizing items around your home that you can re-purpose to create your command center. If not, you may be taking a trip to the store or ordering some of my suggested items below. Your command center should be accessible (in the hub of your home) ours is in the kitchen. In my opinion, most households will benefit from a command center in the kitchen.
I found many of the items for our command center in our office and re-purposed them.
Recommended supplies to create a functional command center:
- White board/Dry Erase Board
- Cork Board
- Magnetic Board
- Dry Erase Calendar
- Clip Boards
- Dry Eraser
- Dry Eraser Markers
- File Rack
- 3M Hooks – these are amazing and can be used all over the house to hang everything!
- Push Pins
You don’t need all the boards listed above. If your refrigerator is magnetic forgo the magnetic board. I highly recommend something with an erasable surface and something to post (push pin) important items so they don’t get lost (movie tickets, special coupons, receipts for returns, etc).
Once you have your command center supplies together, find a wall or use the back of a door in your space to create your command center (our command center is on a wall between the kitchen, mudroom and garage door).
I’d love to see pictures of your command centers! If you are still trying to come up with a command center to fit your needs, Pinterest is a great place to organize some ideas!
